Benjamin Bell

Benjamin Bell was born in 1762 in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia).  He first served as a spy in 1780 warning settlers of approaching Indians.  After the Revolution, he was a captain and a major in Washington County, Pennsylvania.  He died in 1853 in Boone County, Iowa, coming here in 1852 with a son.  His gravesite is in Webster County’s Vegor’s Cemetery on the bluffs of the Des Moines River, west of Stratford.
