Emily Chittenden Carter possessed the true pioneer spirit. She
was the last of nineteen children and a very industrious person.
When her sons came West each had 24 pairs of wool socks, knitted
by his mother, to bring with him. During her last eight years
she pieced over 100 quilts. |

Emily died 14 May 1909. Emily married Chandler Judd
Nettleton 22 Mar 1840. Soon after
their marriage, she came down with small pox
and her hard life began. She had two
children. When the baby was less than
a year old, her husband took her back to her
father’s home and she never saw her husband
again. Her father died very shortly
afterwards. She supported her mother
and children by working in a factory.
She came to Sioux City, Iowa to be near her
son who had migrated west. Emily
Nettleton is buried in the Logan Park
Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. Her grave
was marked by her chapter in 1912.

Smith Tylee died 22 Mar 1905 in Douglas County, WI. Rebecca taught Sunday Schools for many
years. She died at the home of her daughter in Wisconsin
at the age of 95 and is buried at the Purdom Cemetery in
Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, Iowa. |

Martha Wall was born 30 Jun 1821 in Logan County, VA. She married Zimri Moon who died in the 1890’s in Buchanan, Michigan.
He was carrying in a load of wood, tripped and broke his neck.
Their children were Zenas E. Moon, born in 1849, Frances Ellen
Moon born in 1851, Zara E. Moon born in 1852, and Frank White
Moon born in 1855. She later married Samuel Hartford, a
Civil War Soldier who served as a private in Captain Mattison’s
New York Militia. Martha died 9 Jan 1910 and is buried in the
New Lebanon Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cooper County, Missouri.

Warrington Weaver was born 6 Aug 1806 and died 1 Mar 1899. She was married to David
Fuller in 1828. He died in 1832. She then married
John Weaver in 1837 and had been married for 62 years at the
time of her death. She is buried in Oakdale
Memorial Gardens, Section 18, Lot 4, in Davenport, Iowa. |

Susan Wood Ostrander was born 24 June 1817 in Kingsville, Ohio, and died 23
May 1914. Her early life was spent
on a farm where she learned to spin, knit, and weave. She
took her first spinning lesson on her 5th birthday and soon
helped to knit socks and mittens. She wove homespun linen
or wool clothing until her marriage. She was married to
James H. Ostrander in 1834 near Kingsville Ohio.
After a few years of married life, they moved to northern
Indiana and then to Illinois. In 1853, they moved to Cedar
Rapids, Iowa, moving in 1855 to Audubon County, Iowa where Mr.
Ostrander died in 1881. She is buried in the West Liberty
Cemetery north of Glenwood, Iowa. |
