The Lucretia
Deering chapter, named for Mrs. Lucretia Deering, was organized
November 28, 1927. Mrs. Deering became a member of
the Daughters of the American Revolution at Washington, D.C. while
there with her husband, who served three terms in the United States
Congress. She was a member at large until her death in 1919.
The Lucretia Deering chapter has placed two markers in their area to
help keep history alive:

Location: In
Mitchell county at Osage on the Old Cedar Valley Seminary building.
History: Hamlin
Garland, a Pulitzer prize winning novelist was a student here in
1876-1881. He received his first literary inspiration here from
which he produced his early fiction, poems, and middle border
chronicles.

Deering Chapter and Iowa Society DAR 1938
Location: In Mitchell County 1 mile north of Osage on US Highway
218. Marked on plaque affixed to a small boulder located on the
northwest corner of the intersection of US Highway 218 and 370th
Street.
History: Blazed in 1835 by the first U.S. Dragoons under the
leadership of Colonel Stephen W. Kearney, a historical marker placed
by the Iowa Society DAR shows the Dragoon route.
