Swea City, Iowa

title

Anna Maria Lane Chapter DAR of Swea City, Iowa, is Iowa's newest chapter. The DAR, founded in 1890, is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to preserving history, to securing America's future through education, and to honoring and supporting those who serve our nation.

The chapter's name celebrates Anna Maria Lane, the first female soldier from Virginia who fought with the Continental Army in the American Revolution. She is documented to have dressed as a man and accompanied her husband on the battlefield in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Anna Maria Lane was later awarded a pension for her courage in the Battle of Germantown, near Philadelphia. She was wounded in that battle, where is performed "extraordinary military services."
