Maria Lane Chapter DAR of Swea City, Iowa,
is Iowa's newest chapter. The DAR, founded
in 1890, is a volunteer women's service
organization dedicated to preserving
history, to securing America's future
through education, and to honoring and
supporting those who serve our nation.
chapter's name celebrates Anna Maria Lane,
the first female soldier from Virginia who
fought with the Continental Army in the
American Revolution. She is documented to
have dressed as a man and accompanied her
husband on the battlefield in New York,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
Anna Maria Lane was later awarded a
pension for her courage in the Battle of
Germantown, near Philadelphia. She was
wounded in that battle, where is performed
"extraordinary military services."
