Iowa Room Committee
Our Corner in Washington, D.C.
Nancy Geiger, Chairman
This spring, I answered “Yes” to an email
from State Regent-Elect Edee Brunia. So began
my education concerning the lovely first floor
northwest corner room of Memorial Continental
Hall called the Iowa Room. It is located near
the Library and the Museum Gallery. Wow - talk
about prime real estate!
There are over 30 Period Rooms in Memorial
Hall. In 1906, these rooms were offered for
state societies to purchase. The Iowa
Society was the first state to step forward!
In less than three years, the $1,000 purchase
price was paid.
Currently, Iowa Room reflects a 1790’s
parlor. Its history includes being used by the
Registrar General and before that the
Genealogical Editor of the DAR Magazine.
During WWII, the space was used by the
American Red Cross.
The ISDAR Iowa Room Committee has been led
by a very dedicated set of women. I will
continue to learn – and then share – about
these DAR Daughters and the Iowa Room.
The Iowa Room, as it looked
at the Dedication of the new draperies, June
26, 2019.
