Genealogical Records Committee

Shelley Wells, Chairman
GRC pin
The main purpose of the Genealogical Records Committee is to collect a variety of previously non-published genealogical records for submission to the DAR Library in Washington, DC. Acceptable records include records of deeds; marriages; probates; court orders and minute books; town council minutes; parish registers of vital records; vestry minutes or session books; bible records; church records; funeral home records; school censuses; tombstone inscriptions and cemetery records, diaries, papers and letters found in manuscript collections. These materials need not be connected with a DAR patriot or member. Please send these materials directly to this chairman and NOT to the NSDAR Library.

New Children logoThis year the Genealogical Records Committee will be adding the New Children of Patriots Challenge. Everyone of us has a patriot but are there other children that are not listed in the DAR database? Did your patriot have a will/probate that names the children? Or is there another record that names the children?

Please fill out the New Children of Patriot Worksheet and submit your evidence to your chapter Genealogical Records Chairman or you can send the information to me.

Please keep track of your entries as there is a new pin after only 100 entries. But you will need to keep track of your entries using the Genealogical Records Committee authorization form GRC-WP-4000. Please visit the National site or the Genealogical Records Committee Iowa State page.

The GRC Committee is also looking for volunteers to help with the Bible Catalog Project. This project is designed to create a catalog of each unique Bible record found within the Genealogical Records Committee collection. The project is done on the computer from the comfort of your home. It requires the volunteer to review a book and determine if there are any Bible records that need to be cataloged. Each Bible Catalog entry is applied to Book Worm Pin credit.

As your new State Chairman for the Genealogical Records Committee, I am excited to serve and would like to propose a friendly competition that every chapter in Iowa submit 10 pages of historical records. To find out more information please see the NSDAR website under the Genealogical Records Committee.
        Ten Page Chapter Challenge
