Patriot Soldiers Buried in Iowa

Clayton County

Peter Holms/Holmes

Peter Holms/Holmes was born in 1755 in New York State.  Little is known about his military record, except that he was a soldier of the American Revolution.  The 1850 census shows him as listed as a soldier of the American Revolution, 95 years of age and living in the home of Samuel Holms in Mallory Township, Clayton County, Iowa.  Peter Holms died after 1850 and was buried in Goshel Cemetery, Millville Township of Clayton County.  To find the site, go north on US Highway 52.  Turn right on Pumpkin Ridge just before you get to Millville.  Go east about 2 miles on Grave Road.  A church and cemetery are on the left.  A memorial marker was placed on the grave and dedicated October 1, 1972 by the Mary Knight Chapter DAR of Strawberry Point, Clayton County, Iowa.
