William Crockett was born 1749 –
1759 in Virginia. He
enlisted in October 1777 in the
Pennsylvania Militia of
Cumberland County as Private 4th
class in 4th Battalion.
After serving in the
Revolutionary War, he enlisted
in two Indian Wars. His
descendants think he may also
have served in the War of 1812.
He was reported to have been a
cousin of Davy Crockett of Alamo
fame.
It was also said that William
came to Monroe County, Iowa
Territory, in 1844. He
died around 1850 when he was
between 90 and 100 years of age.
He was buried in a small
cemetery on a farm south of
Albia and his remains later
transferred to Oak View Cemetery
in Albia, Iowa.
A history of Crockett was found
engraved on a copper plate
attached to a large boulder in
the southwest part of Monroe
County. It was placed on
the grave by the Betty Zane DAR
Chapter in Albia, Iowa in 1926.
Later it was moved to the Oak
View Cemetery by the Iowa
Society DAR.
