The Waterloo
Chapter is named for the city in which it is located. The
chapter was organized December 8, 1898.
The Waterloo
Chapter has placed a DAR marker at two historical sites.
First Log
House in Waterloo
In 1846,
Charles and America Mullan built the first log house in what
is now Waterloo. In 1852, on the same site, they built the
first frame house. DAR marked the original site in 1925 with
an inscribed bronze plaque secured to an Iowa boulder.
Because of
the relocation of Highway 218, the DAR marker that was
originally dedicated in 1925 was moved to the site of the
first log house. The marker can be viewed at the Park
Commission, 1101 Campbell Avenue, in Waterloo.
Lou Henry
Hoover's Birthplace
Lou Henry
Hoover was the wife of Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the
United States. Lou Henry was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on
March 29, 1875. Her father was Charles D. Henry, a
bookkeeper at a Waterloo bank. Because of her mother's health,
the Henrys moved to California in 1885. Lou graduated from
Stanford University in 1898 and met Hoover as a freshman while
they were both working in the University's geological
laboratory. The original site of the Henry home in
Waterloo was marked by DAR in 1967 but, due to the relocation
of Highway 218, the marker was moved to the Grout Museum of
History and Science for display. The original site was located
at West 4th and Washington streets. The Grout Museum is
located at the Howery Auditorum, 503 South Street,
Waterloo. |
