Parade of Flags

The Buena Vista DAR Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution began displaying what is now known as the ‘Parade of Flags’ on the courthouse lawn in 1973.  Nearly 800 U.S. flags have been given in memory of veterans with roots in Buena Vista County.  Each Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day the beautiful display of these flags fills the open space of courthouse square.

The Flag Burning

These flags,

The symbol of the land we love,

The red, the white and blue;

These flags that served our country well

In service now are through.

Their days are spent, their bodies warn,

We pause now to reflect

The value of their cause

And honor them with our respect.

Let not our flags be trampled on

Nor let them know abuse

But let them have a fond farewell

With thanksgiving for their use.

As well we know with this good-bye

How great the country in our care.

God make us worth of this land

And bless it always, is in our prayer.
